Among the Romans' pithy sayings was, "Work conquers all." Many Americans hold that
idea, whatever kind of "work" they talk about or whatever goals that work serves.
Genesis offers a counter phrase about the "original blessing" of work. Humans are in
Eden's garden to "work/till" it and to "have charge of/guard" it for God.
Work is God's gift and exists before sin. Work is first a blessing. Work, along with the
rest of creation, exists now in a fallen world. But it's not more fallen than anything else.
