Last month, Libby received a Christmas card from an older woman living in remote
Appalachia. The note again thanked Libby for all that she had done to help her. Libby
pulled out her photo album to look at the pictures she took last summer of Bertha and her
home.
At the encouragement of others in the church, Libby signed up to go on a week mission to Appalachia. She remembered meeting the woman that past summer when a group from her church did a service project. At the time, she was unsure what she could do, she had no carpentry experience like others in her group. But something drew Libby to want to accompany the others to work on a house. The group would be replacing the roof.
Libby describes the community as being right out of the television show The Waltons. She was appalled at the living conditions: Bertha's house not only needed a new roof, but some drywall and a fresh coat of paint would do wonders.
It was a great week for all who participated. What surprised Libby was the loving attitude of Bertha. By worldly standards she did not have much, a run-down old house filled with rickety old furniture. But each day she would offer those working on her house a cold drink, and a warm smile. She personally thanked everyone, each day, for helping her. Libby came expecting to help someone in need but realized that God's grace had been extended to her through Bertha. She expected to give and then found herself receiving. Libby was thankful for having met Bertha.
The apostle Paul writing to the Corinthians gave thanks to God for the privilege of knowing them, "I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus."
