Philosophy teachers swap stories about the sophomore summarizing all of existence in
one paper. Systematic theologians have been accused of the same. Physicists, finding
humanity halfway between the smallest world of atoms and the larger world of the
universe, have been baffled in attempts to produce a grand unifying theory. Physicists try
heroically to formulate a mathematical equation that explains the universe's beginning
and how it's unfolding, a theory that describes and holds together all partial theories of
time, space, mass, velocity, temperature, gravity, motion, energy, light ... in short, a
theory that explains everything.
We have a drive to grasp life's totality. The instinct bubbles up within us to gather all of life into one explanation. Paul scrutinized at all he could see, weighed all he could consider, and concluded that our risen Lord has created all, grasped all, and holds together everything that exists.
