Two centuries ago, an elderly Indian starving and wearing only torn rags, wandered into an American settlement. He begged for food and several people brought him bread and meat. As he was eating, one of the local people noticed he was wearing a colored, though very faded, ribbon around his neck. Attached to it was a cloth pouch. When questioned, he said it was given to him when he had served for a while with the Revolutionary Army fighting the British. When he opened the pouch, it contained a faded piece of paper It was a discharge from the Federal Army, signed by General Washington himself, entitling him to a pension for life -- a gift of unexpected dimensions of food, friendship, and needed housing. It was grace, unmerited favor, from an unexpected source.
