Perhaps nothing in the gospel...

Perhaps nothing in the gospel story so completely shows the amazing love of Jesus as
does the washing of the disciples' feet. He knew that he had come from God and was
going to God. Such an awareness might well have filled him with pride, but instead he
took the role of a slave and washed the disciples' feet, including Peter who protested, and
Judas who was paid to betray him.
He had taught them lessons on love, he was on his way to God; why not let the examples stand? No, here was another chance to show a new dimension of love. Another wonderful thing about Jesus was that his intimate closeness to God did not separate him from man, but brought him closer to everyone. Even to the extent that the more others hurt him the more Jesus reached out in love to them.
As Luke suggests, it may be that the disciples had an argument about who was the greatest. Preparation for foot washing which any one of them could have done was neglected. Jesus knowing their feet would be dirty and tired did the refreshing and very humbling job himself. There should have been large water pots at the door for the foot washing -- a cleansing and comforting process. Jesus in the role of a servant blessed and refreshed their aching feet in this gesture of love.
