Here is the origin of our Lord's table observances. Jesus later gave new significance to it,
but in the initial Passover, sacrificial lambs were first offered.
Israel must have wondered about the need for certain acts. In fact, one important aspect escapes many Christians. Many Jewish people faithfully observe it, however. I refer to sharing: "If a household is too small for a whole lamb, it shall join its closest neighbor in obtaining one." Our Jewish neighbors in Los Angeles often invited us to eat Seder (Passover) with them as they celebrated their ancestors' exodus from Egypt.
As Passover helped Israel remember God's deliverance, communion helps us recall that Christ freed us from sin. Many Christians rightly see it as a time to commune with God, but if they see it only as sharing with God, they've lost an essential element found in that first Passover. The Israelites shared with their neighbors. If we don't observe the Lord's table in a spirit of concern for others, we may be neglecting one of its most important elements.
