More valuable than sparrows

Object:
Parents and Teachers: Jesus tells his disciples how valuable
they are in God's sight. He tells them that everything is
valuable -- even the common sparrow. Take this opportunity to
involve your students with some bird projects, to allow them to
think about some of God's creation. Stress that even the birds
are important and noticed by God.
If you are able, bring a bird nest to show to the class. If you know of some bird nests near the church, take the class for a walk and point these out to the students. If in your congregation there is a "birder," a person who studies and watches birds, invite this person to share information with the class.
Finally, suggest that the students draw a picture of what they might look like if they were a bird. You might have them think about what bird they might be if they were a bird. You could help by offering some suggestions -- a dove, a hummingbird, an eagle, an owl, or whatever. As they complete this project remember to stress to them that everything -- even birds -- are noticed by God. Therefore, let them imagine how God notices each of them. A scripture to write on top of the bird drawings could be "You are more valuable than sparrows." (Matthew 10:31)
