The chosen 12
Children's Activity
Object:
Parents and Teachers: Jesus selects his 12 disciples in
this week's lesson. Use this time with your youngsters to
see if they can memorize the names of the 12. They are:
Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
Thomas, Matthew, James the Lesser, Thaddaeus (also known as
Jude), Simon the Zealot and Judas.
As another alternative, have the students write out the names of each disciple. Suggest that students draw a picture of how they think each disciple looked.
Each disciple has a coat of arms (shield). Get a Bible dictionary or encyclopedia from your church library, if possible. Show these to your students. Some students may be interested in drawing the shields. Pictures of these are printed in "Twelve Friends Of Jesus," by CSS Publishing Co., book number 9217, available for $4.95.
Here is a brief description of each shield:
Andrew: blue shield with silver cross
Philip: red shield with gold cross and two loaves of bread
James: blue shield with three gold sea shells (scallop)
Thomas: blue shield with gold spear and carpenter's square
Matthew: white shield with red border and three blue bags
Peter: blue shield with upside-down cross and two keys crossing the cross (one gold and one silver)
John: blue shield with a red serpent sitting in a silver chalice
Thaddaeus (also known as Jude): red shield, with a gold ship
Bartholomew: red shield with three silver knives
James The Lesser: red shield with silver saw
Simon The Zealot: red shield with silver fish on a buff book
Judas: empty shield
