The true light
Children's sermon
Object:
A small paper grocery bag and a flashlight
Note: To prepare for this lesson take a small grocery bag.
Cut out holes and designs in the bag. This allows light to shine
from the bag when a flashlight is turned on and placed inside it.
The bag represents the world. The flashlight represents Christ,
the true light.)
Good morning, boys and girls. Would you like to pretend with me this morning? (Let them answer.) Today's lesson is about lights. The lesson says that God was in the beginning of the world. Without God there was nothing. None of us would be here if it weren't for God. (Point to some of the children and name them and yourself here.) Without God, I wouldn't be here this morning. You wouldn't be here, and you wouldn't be here. None of us would be here. Have you ever thought about that? (Let them answer.) The Bible says that when God created the world, the world was without light. (Hold up the sack.) Now let's pretend. Let's pretend that this sack is the world. It is dark. God sent a man named John to the world. John came to tell people that someone was coming who would light up the world. That light was to be Jesus. (Turn on the flashlight.) Let's keep pretending. Let's pretend that this flashlight is Jesus. How could we light up our world? (Let them offer responses.) Let's turn on the light and place it inside our world and see what happens. (Turn on the flashlight and place it inside the bag.) Look what happened to the world when Jesus came. He brought light to the world. Let's keep pretending for a minute. Let's pretend this week that you are like Jesus and the flashlight. Think of ways that you can spread light to a dark world. Can you name some things you can do? (Let them answer, then offer some suggestions.) Perhaps you could be cheerful, or offer to help at home and do other things that make people feel good. Remember this week that Jesus came as the light of the world. This week try to be a light like Jesus.
