I'll believe it when I see it
Children's sermon
Object:
a photo of a grandparent (or family member)
Good morning, boys and girls. Has anyone ever told you
something that was true, but you didn't believe them? (Let them
answer.) You may not have believed it because it seemed too
unreal to believe. I want to tell you a story of a boy your age
named Thomas. First, I want to show you a photograph of my (name
the person in the photo). How many of you have grandparents?
My story is about a boy who had a grandfather like the one in the photo. Something wonderful happened to the grandfather. It was so wonderful that Thomas didn't believe that it happened.
Thomas lived with his parents and one older brother and one older sister. In another town, not far from them, lived their grandfather. They loved to visit their grandfather. Their grandfather was very old. One day he became ill and had to go to a hospital. This made the three children very sad and very concerned about their grandfather. Thomas was very worried. After about one week in the hospital, the grandfather got better. He became well enough to go back home. The children's parents went to the hospital. They took him back home, but first they took him to see his three grandchildren. When the grandfather arrived he first saw the older two children. They were so happy to see him that they ran to tell Thomas the good news. How do you suppose he reacted? He didn't believe them. Thomas told them that he wouldn't believe his grandfather was out of the hospital unless he saw him with his very own eyes. Thomas ran to see him, and not until he saw him, did he believe it was true.
Something very much like this happened to Jesus' disciple whose name was also Thomas. After Jesus arose from his grave on Easter, he appeared to many of his disciples. But, Thomas wasn't present and he didn't see Jesus. When the disciples told Thomas they had seen him, Thomas said, "I won't believe it until I see Jesus myself." That's what happened in today's lesson. Jesus appeared again. Thomas saw Jesus. Thomas believed. The next time someone tells you something that at first you don't believe, remember the story about Jesus' disciple, Thomas. He did see Jesus. He did believe.
