Don't fear, only believe
Children's sermon
Object:
a hiking stick
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a hiking stick with me
this morning. Sometimes when people take hikes in mountains or
hills they walk with a stick like this. It helps them as they
walk up a hill. I want to tell you a story about a father and his
daughter who took a hike in the hills. It was in a place where
very few people live. Their hike was along a path on a very steep
hill. The father and daughter began their hike. Somewhere along
the way the daughter tripped and fell off the path into a crevice
in the rocks. That's a spot like a cave only very difficult to
get into if you are big like her father. Her father couldn't
reach his daughter. He told her that he would run for help to get
her out. He ran down the path for help. He found a house where
two people lived. He told them, "My daughter is in danger. Please
come quick to help!" One of the people in the house said, "I'm
sorry, there's nothing we can do to help." But the father didn't
give up. "Please come help!" he cried. Then the other person in
the house said, "Don't fear. I know the spot on the hill. I'll
come along with you." The father and the helper raced back to the
girl. The father was amazed to find that the man who agreed to
help could reach down into the crevice and pull the girl out! The
girl was safe thanks to the man who agreed to help.
This story is similar to something that happened to Jesus. A father came to Jesus. The father's daughter was sick. The father wanted Jesus to help the girl. Jesus said, "Don't fear, only believe." Jesus went to the sick girl and made her well.
This week remember that Jesus is like the man who helped the girl climb to safety. Jesus cares about people in trouble. Jesus is our friend when we need help.
