Loving by doing
Children's sermon
Object:
a cereal bowl, a pillow, and a Mother's Day card
Good morning! If I get hungry, I eat. (Take out the cereal
bowl.) How many of you have been hungry this morning and have
eaten? (Let them answer.) If I'm tired, I sleep. (Take out the
pillow.) How many of you slept in your bed last night? (Let them
answer.) One way I show my mother that I love her is by getting a
card for her. (Show the card.) You see, when I feel or believe a
certain thing, then I take some kind of action -- I do something.
By doing something I show my feelings and thoughts about that
person.
Jesus says, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." I love Jesus and I want to obey him just like I want to eat when I'm hungry or sleep when I'm tired. When I love someone, I want to do things for that person. I do love Jesus and I want very much to obey him and keep his commandments. This is why I try to do what is right.
Some people do what is right for other reasons. Perhaps they are afraid that if they don't do what is right, they will be punished. Some people do what is right because they want God to love them and reward them for doing the right thing. We do what is right because we love Jesus. We know that Jesus wants us to do the right thing because Jesus wants what is best for us. When we do the right thing, then that's best for us as well. Since Jesus loves us and wants what is best for us, we try to do what is right.
Can you tell me some things that Jesus might want us to do? (Let them answer. You may have to prompt them by such things as "obey your parents," "do your studies," and "be nice to people," and so forth.) I'm so glad that Jesus loves us and that we have an opportunity to love Jesus by trying to do the right thing in our lives.
Dearest Jesus: We love you! Help us do what is right at all times. Amen.
