The God of hope
Children's sermon
Object:
Advent wreath with candles
Today we are talking about "hope" which is one of those words
we use a lot, but about which we seldom stop to think what it
means. Today I wanted to point out the Advent candles as a sign
of hope for me. Why do you think the Advent wreath candles might
be a sign of hope for me? (Let them answer.)
The Advent candles count down to Christmas. I like Christmas and I look forward to celebrating the birth of Jesus. I have hope in looking forward to the Christmas lights and cards and candles and parties and gifts and wrappings and all the activities. I love Christmas! I hope I have a good one -- and I hope you have the best Christmas of your life! What kinds of hope do you have about Christmas? (Let them answer.)
Hope is one of those wonderful words that is so important in our church. Jesus is the one who gives us hope. Because of him, I hope to have a wonderful future. I hope to live with God in heaven when I die. Isn't hope a wonderful thing? Each week we light another Advent candle and each week my hope of Christmas comes closer.
Dearest Jesus: Keep the exciting hope of Christmas alive in us. Amen.
(Looking to next week: If you use the James 5:7 text, plant a bean seed if you have not already done so. If you planted one last week, plant a new one today so you can better illustrate the James text.)
