When Jesus comes back
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Make an Advent countdown calendar. On
each day prior to Christmas write the date and what you can do on
that day to prepare for Jesus' coming. You might include singing
Christmas carols at the local nursing home or preparing Christmas
cards for special relatives. Also include practical items such as
picking a day to purchase Christmas gifts and wrapping them.
Bible readings of the Old Testament prophecies and birth
narratives should be included. The preparation of the calendar
can be a tremendous aid to focusing on preparation for Jesus.
Most of all -- HAVE FUN ( and allow yourself plenty of time).
*Make an Advent wreath for the season of Advent. A styrofoam circle can have holes punched for candles. (If your church doesn't have an Advent wreath for worship, perhaps you can use a wreath in next Sunday's children's sermon [2nd Lesson].)
*Find stories for each of the candles in Advent and begin or end each class with a story centered on the candle. At the end, light the candle.
*Combine the stories with a scripture reading.
-- Zechariah candle (1st week) -- Luke 1:76
-- Mary candle (2nd week) -- Luke 1:28
-- Joseph candle (3rd week) -- Matthew 1:20
-- Shepherds candle (4th week) -- Luke 2:17-18
*Memorize the scripture reading each week.
