The shield of faith
Children's sermon
Object:
a cardboard shield you have fashioned with the word
"FAITH" emblazoned on it
Here at church we talk a lot about FAITH. But what,
exactly, is faith? (Let them answer.) Faith is one of those
things we cannot see. The Bible describes it as a gift God gives
to all who believe. It means having a trust in God as well as a
belief in God.
When Paul wrote to the Ephesian church, he told them that faith is like a shield. We've all seen movies where actors fight with shields in their hands. Their shields protect them. I brought a shield today to remind us that faith is like a shield. It also protects us from the devil.
If a soldier were in a real fight and wanted to defend himself against someone attacking him with a sword, do you think his hands would work well? (Let them answer.) I don't think so. I think a soldier would want a good shield. If that is the case, how would the soldier make his shield? Would he make it out of paper? (Let them answer.) Would he make it out of cardboard? (Let them answer.) Tell me how the soldier would want his shield. (Let them answer.) He would want it that way so that it would be strong enough to protect him.
Faith is strong enough to protect us from every temptation or trouble that we might have in life. Some bad things sometimes happen to people, but faith protects them. Faith is a wonderful shield. It is better than the strongest metal and more powerful than the biggest muscle-bound man.
Faith is a gift from God. We don't have to pay for it. It is like a birthday present to every believer. Faith is simple trust in God. To have that kind of a shield, you do not have to be an adult or a pastor. Any Christian who believes has faith. I'm glad I have faith and I'm glad you have the shield of faith.
Dear God: Protect us with faith. Amen.
