A mystery solved!
Children's sermon
Object:
A popular mystery novel (or a favorite children's story
such as The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis; The
Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien; or Charlotte's Web by E.B. White)
Some people really like reading mystery novels. (Here you
can summarize the basics of a mystery novel you may have read or
use the following based on Lewis' The Lion, The Witch, And The
Wardrobe.) Mystery novels involve something happening that is not
clear to the reader. Perhaps it is a mystery about children who
go through a magical clothes closet and enter an enchanted world
where they are the rulers. In that land they meet a wonderful
lion named Aslan. These children are the rulers of a land called
"Narnia." Then one day, after many years of ruling their country,
they come across a rusted lamppost in the forest. In the next
instant, the reader discovers that they had not been gone for
years as it had seemed, but only a moment! That is a mystery. But
the reader doesn't discover that mystery until the very end!
On this day called Epiphany we learn the end of life's mystery. We learn that God is in charge and that through Jesus God makes the end of the story Good News to those who believe.
The word "Epiphany" is a big word that means "making clear." It's like making the end of the story clear to us before we actually get to the end of the story. The end of the story is that Jesus is our Lord and Savior. No matter what may happen, Jesus is King and Ruler of all. The story that tells us this is the Epiphany story of the wise men from the East who come looking for "the king of the Jews." No one expects the king to be a baby, but he is. We know that Jesus is a different kind of king than what the people then thought Jesus might be. We know that Jesus is king of our lives, not of our country or any country.
Dearest King Jesus: Be ruler of our lives this Epiphany season and throughout all of our lives. Amen.
