Number one
Children's sermon
Object:
a large poster with the words "WE'RE NUMBER 1" on it
Good morning, boys and girls. In most schools this is the end or close to
the end of football, soccer, girl's basketball and a few other sports. Did
any of you go to any games at the high school this fall? (Wait for show of
hands.) When you were at a game, you might have seen signs about the
school. They would be painted on large paper or poster board. One of the
signs might have looked something like this one. (Show the poster.) What
does it say? (choose someone to read the sign.) It says, "WE'RE NUMBER
1!" Did you see cheerleaders at the game you went to? (Let them respond.)
Sometimes cheerleaders lead a cheer using the words on this poster. Let's
do a cheer now. You join me. (Cheer "we're number 1, we're number 1.")
This time let's clap on the words "We're" and "number" and on the word
"one" put your pointer finger in the air with both hands. (Demonstrate.)
Now let's try it together. (Do the cheer with the motions a couple times.)
Let's do it with a little more enthusiasm. (Do it a little louder.) That's
great! You really sound like you mean it. When a team gets first place or
wins a lot of games, people are always proud of their team. They cheer
loudly at their games.
Our lesson today is about the person who is number one. The Bible says he is the firstborn of all creation. He is before all things. He is firstborn of the dead. In Him all things hold together. He's the head of the church. He is the beginning. He has first place in everything. Who is this terrific person who's always first? (Let them respond.) It's Jesus! Sometimes we call Jesus the Christ. This Sunday is a special day called Christ the King. It's about Jesus being first in a lot of things. But it's always the last Sunday of the church year. It reminds us that Jesus begins our year by being born and he ends our year by being first as our ruler. God puts Jesus first in all these things. God also puts us first in creation. We should spend some time every week remembering to put God first in our lives, too. We're number 1 with God. Let's make God number 1 with us. Let's do another cheer. "God's number 1, God's number 1!" (Do the cheer with the children.) We could do another one for Christ the King Sunday -- "Christ's number 1, Christ's number 1!"
