Earning Respect
Children's Activity
Object:
Parents or Teachers: In today's lesson the word "respect" was explored.
The lesson is the story of the judge who didn't respect God or people.
Several examples were given of ways people respect each other. Discuss
each one of them and if your class is able, divide into groups. Have each
group act out one of the examples. They are all simple enough that few
words will be necessary to demonstrate each example. The examples are:
Native Americans with feathers, honoring and respecting the land by not
littering it or polluting the waters, oriental culture bowing, soldiers
saluting, rising at the Gospel reading, kneeling during parts of the service
and rising when a judge enters the courtroom. Give them each a large piece
of paper divided into four parts. Have the children try to remember at
least four of the ways of showing respect and illustrate the examples.
Talk about the story from the lesson about the judge who didn't have
respect and the woman who kept coming to him until he heard her story
and helped her. Discuss how God is different and respects all of us and
listens to us. Display the pictures of respect.
