Freedom is great!
Children's sermon
Object:
some toy handcuffs (or use a chain)
Good morning! What do I have here? (Show them the handcuffs
or chain.) If these are put on someone, that person is no longer
free, is he? (Let them answer.) That's right. With these on, the
person can no longer do whatever the person wants. He or she is
under the control of the person who cuffed (chained) them. Now,
I'm sure that none of you has been arrested or put in jail, but
you have seen on television or in the movies where people are put
in jail and they lose their freedom when that happens. You
wouldn't want that to happen to you, would you? (Let them
answer.)
Every one of us is in danger of losing our freedom because
that mean old devil would just love to have you under his
control. He wants to chain you by getting you to sin and forget
all about Jesus. Jesus came down to earth and died on the cross
to pay for our sins. When he did that, he set us free from the
chains of the devil. But, we could lose that freedom if we let
the devil tempt us to stop believing in Jesus. Now, you don't
want that to happen, do you? (Let them answer.)
What can we do to make sure the devil doesn't capture us and
make us his slaves? (Let them answer.) Yes, those are all good
things. One important thing we can do is make sure we come to
church every chance we get. We need to be here where there are
fellow Christians and where we continue to hear all about Jesus
and the wonderful things he has done for us. Are all of you going
to do that so you can keep the freedom that Jesus won for us?
(Let them answer.) Good! I know you want to be free and not
slaves to sin and the devil. That's why you are here.
Dearest Jesus: We are so happy that you have made us your free
people. Help us to resist all the devil's temptations so that we
will always be free. Amen.
