"How many coats?"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: Today is the traditional "Joy" Sunday
and that fact is reflected in the Philippians passage. It is
reflected indirectly in the gospel. As we share our abundance
with others, a feeling of joy almost always emerges. Children
can experience the joy of giving as easily as adults.
* Light the Advent wreath. If you have a traditional wreath
with three purple candles and one pink one, today you light the
pink one. It symbolizes joy.
* Do a study of John the Baptist and his message of
repentance.
* Some church words are not familiar terms to children.
Today's first lesson explores one: JOY. Others that you might
want to explain would be REPENTANCE, ADVENT, FAITH, HOPE, PEACE.
Get a good biblical dictionary and look up these terms. Then
explain them on a child's level.
* Have some project that takes an area of your abundance as
a class or as a family and share it with others who are lacking
such abundance.
Sunday school assembly opening:
* Light the third Advent candle. If you have a traditional
wreath of three purple or blue candles and one pink, light the
pink "Joy" candle today.
* Sing a joy song such as "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" or
"Joy to the World" or "I've Got the Joy, Joy, Joy."
* Take up a collection for the disadvantaged.
