It's amazing what a big deal it is to say "thank you." Think of the times when you've done something nice for someone else. Maybe you gave a gift. Maybe you held a door open for someone. Maybe you had a houseguest. Did you get thanked? Probably not every time. How did it feel when you weren't thanked? Why didn't that person thank you?
Jesus understands that feeling well. He was always doing good things for other people, and rare were those who showed any gratitude. In today's lesson 10 people are healed by Jesus. Only one was considerate enough to thank him.
Teach your children about being grateful. Talk about what it means to have a grateful heart and to be a person who is gracious. One of the best ways to do this is to make a list of some recent kindnesses you've each received. Think of some of the things in your life you should be thankful for. Write them down with your children. You can have one big list for the whole family, or you can each have your own list.
Choose seven things you are thankful for the most. Then, for the next seven days, find a way to express your appreciation for them. If you are thankful for a particular friend, do something to let him or her know. If you are grateful for a gift you've received, write a thank you note. If someone does something nice for you, make sure to say thank you. And, most importantly, thank God in your prayers for all your blessings. Begin to recognize the gifts around you. That's the biggest way to develop a thankful heart.
