The peace of the comforter
Children's sermon
Object:
a big, fluffy comforter
This is my comforter. It's like a big, soft blanket that I
put on my bed. One of my favorite things in the whole world is to
get in my bed and snuggle up when I am cold or very tired.
In our Bible lesson today, Jesus tells the disciples that he
will be leaving them soon and going to be with his father in
heaven. He tells them not to be frightened of being without him,
because he will send the Holy Spirit to be with them. He promises
that they won't be alone. Even though they couldn't see him he
would still be there.
What is the Holy Spirit? In other places in the Bible the
Holy Spirit is called "the comforter." I think that's a great
name. The Holy Spirit was sent by God to be a comforter and a
helper to us. Jesus knew that he would soon leave the earth, but
he promised that part of him would never leave them. He wants
people to know that he is with them all the time.
He said to the disciples that he will leave his peace with
them. He says, "Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be
afraid." The Holy Spirit brings us peace. The Holy Spirit brings
us comfort. The Holy Spirit is the way that Jesus is still with
us, not just for the disciples, but for us today.
So, when you are cold or tired or in need of some comfort,
think of the Holy Spirit and how God has given us the gift of
peace. All we have to do is reach out and take the gift.
Prayer: Dear God, you have sent your gift of the Holy Spirit to
be our comforter and friend. Thank you for sending part of
yourself to be with us always. Amen.
