Forgiving each other
Children's sermon
Object:
a bag of popcorn and a big towel on which to spread the popcorn
Good morning! Did anyone feel this week like someone else was present even though you couldn't see or hear him? If you did, it was me. I thought and prayed about all of you this week, and I tried to tell each one of you how much I love you. When praying, I tried to picture you in my mind. I pictured Sally with her long hair and Mike with his big muscles. (give more examples) You seemed so real when I was praying that I thought maybe you knew I was right there with you.
Well, I have a story. One day Peter, one of Jesus' disciples, asked Jesus how many times he should forgive another person. I guess one of his friends was always messing up with Peter. Peter remembered the scriptures and asked Jesus if he agreed with the old ways and would recommend forgiving a person seven times. Seven times is a lot of forgiving.
Let me show you what I mean. I brought a bag of popcorn and I am going to take out seven pieces of popcorn and lay them on this towel. Every time I forgive someone I will pick up one piece. Now, let's suppose Mike made a promise to me and did not keep it. Mike wants me to forgive him and I have seven pieces of popcorn so I will take one of them away; that's the way I can keep count.
But Mike also told a lie about me and was so sorry and asked my forgiveness. I still have six so I use another piece of popcorn. Yesterday he told me I was his best friend, but today he told Tony he was his best friend. There goes Mike's third forgiveness. Then Mike took my favorite toy car and told me that someone else had done it. That is two more forgivenesses, so there are only two left. And the next thing he did was start a fight with me and told his mother that it was I who started it. Whoa, Mike is my best friend and in two days I have forgiven him seven times. But Mike is out of popcorn. I don't have any more forgiveness for him.
Jesus knew that love was much greater than keeping count. He told Peter that a person should be ready to forgive others as many times as they needed it. As a matter of fact, I want to show you how much I love Mike. (dump the whole bag of popcorn on the towel) I am ready to forgive Mike this many times and more if I have to.
The reason I can forgive him so often is because God is ready to forgive me as many times as I need it. Filled with God's love and forgiveness, I can forgive Mike and anyone else who wants me to forgive them.
Prayer: Thank you for being a forgiving God, O Lord. Amen.
