You, Jesus, and God
Children's Activity
Object:
"Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me" (v. 40). We are the hands and feet of Christ in the world. When we do the work of Jesus Christ, people will see Christ in us. They will see God in what we do. It's important for children to know that they have a powerful place in God's world: They are his representatives to those around them.
Spend some time finding out about some of the various outreach projects and ministries that your congregation has. No doubt there are many groups of people involved in service to others in one way or another. Perhaps the active ministries are directed inward, at the members of your congregation (youth group?). Perhaps they are more outreach oriented, aimed at meeting the needs of non-members (food bank?). Maybe your church does some of both. However your faith community engages in ministry, people all around you are doing the good work of Jesus Christ.
Invite some people to come into your classroom or home and share with the children what work is being done by your church. Help the children see some of the tangible ways that we can be the hands and feet of Christ to the people around us. Then, make a banner together celebrating the diversity of gifts that the members of your church have. We aren't all the same, but we are all working toward a common goal.
