Adopted by God
Children's sermon
Object:
the classified pages from a newspaper
Good morning! If you wanted to get a pet, where would you look? (responses) I have a friend who really wanted to have a pet, and she put an advertisement in the newspaper. (hold up the paper) This section of the newspaper is called the classifieds. It has information to help people find something they're looking for. My friend put an ad in the paper saying that she was looking for a dog that needed to be adopted.
Do you know it means to adopt a pet? It means that you accept the pet into your home and agree to love it, take care of it and give it everything it needs. That's what my friend did. She put her name in the paper and a man called her about a puppy that had been abandoned by someone who didn't want it anymore. The puppy didn't have a home and didn't have anyone to care for it. It needed love, and my friend had lots and lots of love to give. They were perfect for each other. My friend took the puppy home and they became the best of friends.
God's love for us is just like that. Just like my friend had lots of love to give, God has been wanting to love us. He has been waiting eagerly to welcome us into his family and receive us as his children. Do you know how long he has been waiting to give us his love? Since the beginning of time. We may not realize it, but we've been waiting too. We need his love. All we have to do is find each other.
The newspaper helped my friend and her puppy find one another. The Bible is kind of like a newspaper. It's full of stories advertising that God is looking for us. He has accepted us, loved us and wants to give us everything we need. All we have to do is accept his love and become members of his family.
Prayer: Thank you for adopting us as your children. Amen.
