Taking on the yoke
Children's sermon
Object:
a rope or a large strip of cloth
Good morning, everyone! Today we're going to talk about what it means to be yoked to something. Do any of you know? What is a yoke? (see if anyone knows) A yoke is used to connect animals together when they are working. You might have seen pictures of oxen on a farm hooked together by a big wooden bar. The bar is the yoke. Yokes are used for a couple of reasons. First, they help keep the oxen together so that they share the work that needs to be done. Second, when the oxen are hooked together they cannot go off on their own. Each ox is changed and affected by the movement of the other ox.
Let's see if we can demonstrate that here. I need two volunteers. (select two helpers) Thanks! I'm going to tie your legs together at the ankle, kind of like when you do a three-legged race. Okay? (do this) Walk around a little bit. How does it feel to be tied together? (see what they think) Now see what happens if you try to go different directions from one another. That didn't work very well, did it? You both had to work pretty hard and you really didn't get very far. It would be easier if you could agree on where you want to go. When you're tied together like this you must work together. You're partners.
In our reading, Jesus says that we should yoke ourselves to him. He wants to be our partner, just like in our example today. Jesus wants to connect himself to us. If we're yoked to Jesus he can help us live and show us the right way to go. He will help us live the best life possible and he promises to help us carry any burden we have.
Prayer: Jesus, please come and give us the guidance and direction we need so that we can go the right way. Amen.
