Listen to him
Children's Activity
Object:
Today's gospel lesson is about the Transfiguration of Christ. It is a powerful story. Peter, James and John watch as Jesus is transfigured before them and begins to shine with a heavenly light. While this amazing thing is happening, they hear a voice from the sky. The voice says that Jesus is God's beloved Son -- listen to him!
How many times have you gotten frustrated because someone wouldn't listen to you? It's so aggravating, especially when we have something important to say. God must feel like that too. He is speaking all the time but we are too busy, distracted or self-absorbed to notice. Too often we do not take the time to be alone with him and listen to what he has to say.
Prayer isn't just talking to God. Prayer involves listening to God as well. This week, squeeze in some time to pray every day. Pray alone. Pray as a family. Pray. Prayer takes discipline and commitment, but don't let that be overwhelming. If it helps, think of prayer as a conversation with a friend. You talk, your friend talks. You listen, your friend listens. That's what a regular conversation is like. Eventually God's voice will be easier to recognize and you'll be more comfortable being in conversation with him.
Here are a few things that might be helpful as you get started:
* Have a time to pray that's the same every day.
* Begin with small conversations at first -- five minutes is okay.
* Be honest with God about what's on your mind.
* Read the Bible or sing a hymn if words are hard to find.
* Leave enough quiet in your prayer time to listen to God.
* Be consistent. Keep doing it. Prayer takes practice.
* Believe and know that God loves spending time with you!
