Prepare your hearts
Children's Activity
Object:
We are busily preparing our homes. The schools are putting up decorations. The retail stores have been getting ready for quite a while; some began getting ready before Halloween was even over! There's a lot to prepare, and it's easy to get caught up in all the hustle and bustle of the season. Advent takes four weeks, but not because it takes that long to decorate!
It takes four weeks because we need the time to prepare our hearts. That's a little more complicated than preparing our homes. We need to be ready to see him and know what Jesus is bringing into the world. It's a big deal that God chose to come and live among us. The idea of God taking human form is hard to grasp fully, so we need time to pray and think about what it means. If we prepare our hearts, we'll be more able to celebrate the full meaning of Christmas. This week, spend some time talking about what it means to get our hearts ready.
1) What does it mean to "make our hearts ready"?
2) What do we need to clean out in order to make room for the love that Jesus brings?
3) Is there anything standing in the way of our ability to see him clearly?
4) What is God doing by coming to dwell with us?
While you're in the midst of your preparations, remember to take time to prepare your hearts as well. Make sure that your hearts are ready to welcome the baby when he comes. Slow down -- pray -- wait. The light of the world will come, just as promised. The miracle of Christmas is just around the corner!
