Object:
a pocket watch, a ring, or something you have inherited
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought with me this morning something very special to me. (show them the inherited piece you have with you) This is a very special watch. Do you know what kind of a watch this is? (let them answer) It is called a pocket watch and it once belonged to my grandfather. He kept it in a vest in a special pocket while he worked.
I remember my grandfather would take the watch out of his pocket and check the time and then put it back in his pocket. When my grandfather died a couple of years ago, I was surprised to find out that I had inherited the pocket watch. Did you hear that special word? (let them answer) Do you know what inherited means? (let them answer) It means that my grandfather made plans and named me as the owner of the watch after he died. I inherited my grandfather's watch. It is a gift from one person to another after one dies.
Someday you may inherit something from your grandfather or grandmother or maybe some special friend. It will be very special to you because you will know it is something they wanted you to have.
We have all inherited a really special gift. Do you remember that Jesus died? (let them answer) Good, I am glad that you remembered this, because when Jesus died, he gave all of us a gift. He gave us forgiveness for all of our sins and a promise to live forever in God's kingdom.
People used to worry about what would happen to them after they died. They would fret for hours thinking of how bad it would be when their lives were over. They dreamed dreams about coming back to earth as something different, like a flower or a monkey or maybe even a rock. Would anyone like to come back to earth after they died as a rock? (let them answer) Would anyone like to be a monkey? (let them answer) How about a flower? (let them answer)
What we really want is to be ourselves only without our sin. We want to be like Jesus and be resurrected from the grave and live together with God forever.
Jesus made that happen. He died so that we might live. He gave to us our inheritance from God. It isn't money or watches or a car or a house. Our inheritance is a new life that Jesus has given to all of us who believe in him. It's what Jesus has for all of us. He wants us to inherit God's kingdom with joy and love.
