Dreams and visions
Children's sermon

a blank piece of drawing paper
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought a blank piece of paper today because I want to talk about visions. Does anyone know what a vision is? (let them answer) A vision is a picture you get in your mind of something. It might be while you are sleeping and dreaming or it might be in the daytime while you are awake. Is it something you could draw on this piece of paper? (let them answer) Not really. You might be able to draw some of your dream or the picture in your mind, but it would be hard to draw it exactly. Can you control what kinds of pictures come into your mind? (let them answer) No, you really can't. Do you ever see something scary in your dreams? (let them answer) Sometimes the pictures we get in our minds are very scary and frightening. Have you ever seen something beautiful in your dreams or pictures in your mind? (let them answer) What's the most beautiful thing you've seen? (let them each share) There are lots of beautiful things, but even if you tell me about them, if I drew them on this paper, would it look just like what you would draw? (let them answer) No, because we would both get a different picture in our minds.
Our lesson today is about a picture in someone's mind. His name was John. Not John the Baptist, but John, Jesus' friend. John was telling people all about Jesus and some people didn't want him to, so they had him sent to an island to live all by himself so he couldn't tell anyone anymore stories about Jesus. While he was alone on this island, John had lots of pictures in his mind. He did his best to write down what he was seeing. He wrote lots and lots of pages describing what he saw. Some of his visions were scary. But others were very beautiful. He saw visions of what heaven might look like. We all have visions of what we think heaven will look like. But could we draw it on this blank piece of paper? (let them answer) No, we could all hear the same words, but our pictures in our minds would all be different. I'm really glad we have minds that can see beautiful pictures of what heaven might be like. I'm glad we have John's beautiful picture of what heaven might be like. When we hear John's words, we get our own pictures in our minds!
