Let's get together
Children's sermon
Object:
a grocery bag with bread and wine or grape juice in it
Hello, boys and girls. I brought a grocery bag because I want to talk about groceries with you. What kinds of groceries do we put in a grocery bag? (let them name foods and other items) We can put lots of things in a grocery bag. When we shop for a whole week's groceries, we might put a little of everything in our bags because it has to last for a whole week. Sometimes we shop for some special items. Let's play a game. I'll name some things that might be in a grocery bag and you tell me what it might be for. In my grocery bag is a cake mix, some eggs, some frosting, some candles, and some hats. What did I shop for? (let them answer) It's someone's birthday! Let's try again. In my grocery bag are some hotdogs, some ketchup and mustard, some pickles, some lemonade, and some paper plates. What did I shop for? (let them answer) Someone is having a picnic! Here's another one. In my grocery bag is some stuffing, a turkey, some pumpkin pie, and some cranberry sauce. What did I shop for? (let them answer) It's for Thanksgiving!
Our lesson today is about remembering to get together and share special times. Birthdays and picnics and thanksgiving are all times when we get together to share special times. We remember things that happened before, we plan for things that are coming up soon, and we share memories. I have some things in my shopping bag today. Let's see if you can tell what we shopped for this time. (open the bag and take out the bread and wine) Can you tell? (let them answer) That's right. It's for communion. Today is Good Friday. It's a special day when we get together to remember Jesus' life and death and resurrection. We have a special meal to share. We share it when we get together like this and remember Jesus.
