Where's the power?
Children's sermon
Object:
a meter that measures the flow of electricity
Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?" (v. 30)
Good morning, boys and girls. What do you think is going to happen this week? (let them answer) That's right, the Fourth of July. How many of you remember watching the fireworks last year on the Fourth of July? The fireworks are beautiful and they make this holiday very exciting. Fireworks are very powerful and the color in the fireworks happens when they explode.
There are other things that have power besides fireworks. Electricity has power, doesn't it? (let them answer) Electricity can light the rooms in our house or run a big saw that cuts trees into boards. Electricity heats some of our homes and also air conditions them. We even have electric cars.
I brought along a little gadget with me this morning that measures electricity. Every electrician carries one of these with him. When they hook it up to the right place, it tells them if a certain piece of equipment is getting the right amount of power. This is a very important piece of equipment. It tells you when the power is on.
There is a story in the Bible about the power of Jesus. It is a wonderful story because it is about a woman who had a problem for a long time. She was becoming very weak and sick. One day she saw Jesus when he was preaching in her village. She was too weak to talk loud or even walk up to him and ask for the help she needed, so she did the best thing she could do. When Jesus walked by, she reached out and touched his clothes. Jesus felt that pull and also felt the power leave his body. If we could measure Jesus' power like we do electricity, we would have seen his power level drop and her level go up. Immediately, Jesus asked who had touched his clothes. He knew that the power to heal had left his body and entered the body of someone else. The woman answered that it was she who had touched his clothes. Jesus looked at her and blessed her for her faith and made her well. No longer would she have her problems. She was well.
That is the kind of power that Jesus has and the way that he uses it. Jesus loves us and cares for our problems with a power that is more powerful than the biggest firework or the largest machine run by electricity. The next time you see power, real power, I want you to think of Jesus and the day he healed a sick woman. Just by touching his clothes she received the love of God and the power of healing. Amen.
