No church here
Children's sermon
Object:
use your hands and teach the children about the church and all the people
(Folding hands) say: "Here is the church"
(Hold up both index fingers together) say: "Here is the steeple"
(Opening thumbs) say: "Open the doors"
(Unfolding hands to show your fingers) say: "and here are the people"
I like this little poem because it tells about some church buildings I have been in in my life. Sometimes there are many people and sometimes very few. What matters about church is not the building or if the building has a steeple, but the people and God who meets God's people in that place.
The Apostle John tells about a day when there will be no church buildings. Why do you suppose there will be no church buildings in heaven? (Let them answer.) Perhaps it is because God will be so near the people that they will not have to set aside a special place such as a church building to remind them of God.
This Thursday we celebrate Ascension Day -- the day Jesus went back to heaven. The wonderful news we have is that even though Jesus is not here like I'm here this morning, Jesus has promised to always be near us. God never leaves us. Sometimes, since we can't see or feel or hear God, we think God is not near. But God is near. I'm glad for that, aren't you?
