Gifts from God
Children's sermon
Object:
a number of boxes wrapped in gift paper (one for each child) and a wastebasket [Each box will have paper in it with a word or words about spiritual faith printed on it such as speaking with wisdom, speaking with knowledge, faith, working miracles...]
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be
uninformed. (v. 1)
Good morning, boys and girls. I brought along some gifts today and I thought I might share them with you. How many of you like gifts? (let them answer) Is anyone tired of receiving gifts? (let them answer) I didn't think so.
I am going to pass out the gifts and you can open them if you would like but you must put all of the wrapping paper in this wastebasket. (let them begin to open the packages) Did everyone receive his or her gift? (let them answer) Did anyone not receive a gift? (let them answer) Look closely inside of the box. Did you find a piece of paper with some writing on it? (let them answer) Let me read what is on each one of your papers. (read them out loud) Wow! These are really special gifts. Do you know where these kinds of gifts come from? (let them answer) These are gifts from God.
If God gave you the gift of faith, then he gave you the gift of believing things that you cannot see. That is a real gift. If God gave you the gift of healing, then you may be a doctor, a nurse, or another medical specialist. One of the gifts is working miracles and another one is to be able to look in the future and be a prophet or be able to understand difficult things and tell the way God wants his world to be. These are all very wonderful gifts and God spreads out these gifts to all of his people.
Suppose God gave you the gift of being able to work miracles. If you could make a miracle, what would it be? (let them answer) Do you think you would make people rich or would you give them some other miracle gift?
Saint Paul says that God has blessed every one of us with a gift and we should use it in the name of Christ. God gives some the gift of learning and others the gift of teaching. Those are great gifts. Some people learn new things all of their lives and they write books or make new medicines or develop rockets that can take people to outer space. Some people love the gifts that God gave them to take care of very sick people. Taking care of sick people is a real gift.
All good gifts do not come wrapped in special paper. Many of the gifts we receive from God are to be shared with others. But every gift is something special, very special, when it comes from God. Amen.
