Our tears
Children's sermon
Object:
a small bottle with very little water in it to represent tears and someone hidden making cries of great sorrow
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud
cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard
because of his reverent submission. (v. 7)
Good morning, boys and girls. I want you to listen carefully and tell me what you hear. (have the first cries of sorrow) What do you think that was? (let them answer) Let's listen again. (repeat the cries of great sorrow) Did you hear that? What is it? (let them answer) Does it sound like someone who is very sorrowful or really hurting? (let them answer) Do you want to hear it once more to be sure? (for a third time, let the person cry out in great sorrow) I think that is what it is. Someone is really hurting inside with a lot of pain and wishes the pain would go away.
I brought something with me today and I want to see if you can guess what it is. (show them the bottle) Do you see anything inside the bottle? (let them answer) That's right, there is a little water in the bottle. Where do we get water? (let them answer) Those are all very good answers. We get water from the rain, the river, the lakes, the creeks, melting snow, the oceans, and some of it comes from plants that store up water inside of them. But the water in this bottle did not come from any of those places. Instead it came from a person. We call them tears. How many of you have tears when you cry? (let them answer) That's right, we all make tears. Sometimes it happens when we are very happy and more often it happens when we are very unhappy and sad.
Today the writer in the Bible tells us that when Jesus was living on earth, he would pray to God for all of the people and their sins. Jesus did not just pray for himself but he prayed for his disciples, for the lonely, for the poor, for the injured, and the dying. He prayed for his enemies and for all of the people on the earth. Sometimes it would make him so sad that he would actually cry out in a voice of great sorrow and pain. It is said that water filled his eyes and there were tears of great sorrow for all of the sin in the world. It really hurt him.
Jesus is God's Son and he shared with his Father all of the ugliness there was in the world. He told him about the way men made war with each other, lied about one another, stole food from the poor, and took clothing from the old and young. People were filled with sin and Jesus felt every sin as he prayed to God to stop the pain and bring peace to the world where there was no hope. Jesus prayed for forgiveness for every human and it caused him to hurt.
Jesus died for all of our sins and God said that if we love Jesus with all of our hearts, we wouldn't have to cry like Jesus did. Instead, Jesus died for us all so that we would not have to cry in the way Jesus did ever again. Amen.
