Bold or quiet?
Children's sermon
Object:
a couple of volunteers -- one to be bold and one to be quiet
Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may
receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (v. 16)
Good morning, boys and girls. If I said, "That was a bold move," what would the word "bold" mean? (let them answer) How many of you know what the word "quiet," means? (let them answer) Good, quiet means we did something that very few people saw and probably did not care about. When you make a bold move, that is the opposite. A bold move tells everyone around that this is what you feel and this is what you are going to do. Most people watch bold moves made by other people.
I need some volunteers. I want a very bold person and a very quiet person. Who would like to be the bold child and who would like to be the quiet child? (let them volunteer) Pretend that both of you have done something that you are not very proud of and you want to tell God about it. Yesterday when no one was looking you each took a piece of cake. When your mothers asked who ate the cake, both of you pretended to know nothing about it. This is really bothering you. You want to say something to your moms, but first you also know that you have sinned before God in lying about something you did wrong.
I am going to ask the quiet child to see how he/she would act and talk in front of God. (Bring up the quiet volunteer, have him/her fold his/her hands, bow his/her head, and very quietly ask God for forgiveness telling God he/she did not mean to take the cake and make everyone unhappy. He/she just saw it, ate it, and promises never do it again. You can lead with questions that will get the child to say most of this.) I am now going to ask the bold child how he/she would act and talk in front of God. (The bold child should now come forward, hands open and down at his/her side, telling God in a loud voice that he/she made a real mistake by eating the cake that he/she shouldn't have eaten, then lied about it. Lead him/her with questions, boosting his/her voice and making him/her very bold.)
How do you think God feels toward both of these individuals? One is very quiet and meek and the other one is very bold. How many of you would act like the first person, the meek and quiet one, before God? How many of you would like to be like the bold person?
The Bible says that we should be bold and approach God and tell him of our sin so that we can go back and help others. Don't waste time when you have sinned thinking that maybe God didn't see you or that God really doesn't care about the little things. Instead go to God, tell him you are sorry and ask for his mercy. Then after you are blessed, get back to helping others with the things that you have learned.
Remember God really does care. God knows that we are not perfect and he wants to forgive us for the wrongs that we do and make us better people. Amen.
