Where to look
Children's sermon
Object:
a dictionary, a cookbook, and a Bible
When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him;
and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of
them where the Messiah was to be born. (vv. 3-4)
Good morning, boys and girls. If you did not know how to spell a word, where would you look to find out how to spell it correctly? (let them answer) That's right, the dictionary. (pick out a word, look it up, and spell it) That works every time. Now let's suppose you wanted to make a certain kind of cookie, like a brownie, and you did not know what to use to make a brownie. Where would you look? (let them answer) That's right, again. You would look in a cookbook. (open the cookbook to a brownie recipe and read it) That was kind of fun, wasn't it?
Let me see if you can answer a tougher one. If you were the King of Judah and you wanted to find out where the Baby Jesus was born, where would you look to find the answer? I don't think they had newspapers with birth announcements. There were no radios or televisions. Where would you find your information? That is what King Herod wanted to know because he was really afraid of the Baby Jesus. Of course, kings don't ever tell you that they are afraid. King Herod wanted to kill the Baby Jesus so that he would always be the king, and he heard that the child sent from God would become a king.
The wise men from the East came and asked King Herod where they would find the Messiah or the Baby Jesus. They told Herod about following a star for many days and nights and they wanted to bring gifts to this child that would soon great. King Herod rushed out to his trusted priests and asked them the question. After a little bit of a search, they told Herod that the Holy Child was going to be born in Bethlehem. It said so right in the Bible. I don't think King Herod read his Bible very often, but it was right there. Let me read it to you. (read Micah 5:2)
King Herod told the wise men where to find Jesus and then asked them in a sneaky way to stop back after they had found the Baby Jesus and tell him all about it. The wise men went to Bethlehem, found the Baby Jesus, and gave him the gifts they had brought. Then, while they were sleeping, an angel visited them in a dream and told them of King Herod's plans to kill Jesus, so they went back home by a different road and never again spoke to the mean King Herod.
We find the right way to spell a word in the dictionary. We find the recipe for cookies in the cookbook. When we want the real answers about Jesus, we find them in the Bible. That's the place we should find out about Jesus every day. Amen.
