Jesus lives in us
Children's sermon
Object:
a banana, an orange, a piece of bread, a candy bar
There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no
longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. (v. 28)
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to be talking about how people can be the same. When you see a person, what is the first thing you know about them? (let them answer) Is the person a man or a woman, a boy or a girl? Is that the first thing you notice? (let them answer) What else can you tell about the person? (let them answer) Very good, you can tell whether they are old or young, if they have hair or if they are bald. Some people have a different skin color. What else can you tell about them? (let them answer)
I brought along some different kinds of food today and I want you to tell me what they are when I hold them up. (hold up the foods and ask the children to identify them) Very good! When you eat the food what happens to it? (let them answer) Do the bananas go one place, the orange another place, and the bread in its own corner? Does the candy bar hide behind the tummy? (let them answer) No, they all go into the tummy and get all mixed up. Some of the food makes strong bones, some makes beautiful skin, and some goes to make blood.
What color is blood? (let them answer) Are you sure there isn't rich blood or poor blood? (let them answer) Is there black blood, white blood, brown blood, or other colors? (let them answer) Of course not! All of our blood looks the same. We don't even have to eat the same foods. You can have spinach and I can eat apples and we will still have the same color of blood.
This is like being a Christian. We are all Christians. We are not old or young Christians, fat or thin Christians, boy or girl Christians, Cincinnati Reds Christians or Boston Red Sox Christians. Do you know why we are all Christians? (let them answer) There is a reason why we are all Christians and it is because we are all baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. We are followers of Christ.
The next time you bump your knee and it bleeds, or the next time you scratch your elbow and you see some blood, I want you to remember that your blood is the same color as all of those people around you.
We live in Jesus and Jesus lives in us. We are all one: black, white, old, young, boy, girl, fat, and skinny. All of us belong to Jesus Christ and we are Christians. Amen.
