Your home
Children's sermon
Object:
a pillow, a kitchen chair, and an afghan
Jesus answered him, "Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father
will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them." (v.
23)
Good morning, boys and girls. "Christ is risen." (let them respond with "Christ is risen indeed!") Something very special is going to be shared with you today and you will never guess what it is. Let me ask you a couple of things to start us in finding the answer to our mystery. How many of you live in a house? (let them answer) How many of you call it your home? (let them answer) Do you know why you call it your home instead of your house? (let them answer) That's right, because your family lives in your home.
What are some of the things that you have in your home that make it your home? (let them answer) Good, all of those things make it your home. I brought along things that I think about when I think of home. I have a favorite pillow. (show them the pillow, kitchen chair, and afghan as you talk about the item) It just fits and I can hardly wait to get into my bed and put my head on the pillow. I also brought along my kitchen chair. I sit in this chair every time I eat breakfast or lunch at home. Finally, I brought my favorite afghan that I put over my legs and feet when I am watching television in the winter at home. There are a lot of other things that I have at home that are not anywhere else.
Do you know all the people that stay in your home? (let them answer) Is everyone a part of your family? (let them answer) Do you have room for anyone else? (let them answer) Are all of the bedrooms filled up? (let them answer) Is there any room around the kitchen table? (let them answer)
In the Bible today, there is something really special. It tells us that if you love Jesus and keep his word, he will come and stay in your home. Wow! How would you like to have Jesus live with you in your home? Jesus would be with you every day just like your mom, dad, your sisters, and your brothers. He won't bring anything like a pillow or an afghan. He will just join the family. He can be near when you sleep, share breakfast and lunch at the kitchen table, and go outside when you play.
I am not kidding when Jesus says that he would like to live with you in your home. He said it and I believe it. Tonight when you say your prayers, it would be a good idea to invite Jesus to stay with you. I am sure he would love all of the other rooms in your house. I also think that your mom and dad and the rest of the family will be happy to have Jesus stay in your home just as much as you want him to stay with you. Amen.
