Listen to God
Children's sermon
Object:
a piece of paper, a book
No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew
strong in his faith as he gave glory to God. (Romans 4:20)
Good morning, boys and girls. There are some words that I don't like to say. I don't like the word maybe. I do not like the word perhaps, or the words I'm not sure. Do you know why I don't like those words? (let them answer) Maybe, perhaps, and I'm not sure do not tell me anything. I don't know if you want to go swimming or if you are going be on time or if you won or lost the game. Maybe I will go swimming. Perhaps I will be on time. I'm not sure what the score was of the game I played.
Have you ever tried to make a piece of paper stand up by itself? (let them answer then try to stand up a piece of paper) It won't work will it? It will fall this way and then fall that way and soon it will just fall down. Paper is a kind of maybe, perhaps, or I'm not sure thing.
Let me show you the difference. This is a book and it is filled with paper and the paper even has words on it but let's see how it stands up. (stand the book up) There is no maybe, perhaps, or I'm not sure with the book. It is standing and showing real strength.
There was a man named Abraham who had a wife named Sarah and they were quite old. They were older than your grandfather or your great-grandfather. They were really old. But God chose them to start a new nation that would some day have many people. Abraham listened to God and accepted the decision by God to move to another part of the world. There was no maybe, perhaps, or I'm not sure in Abraham's voice. He trusted in God and set out on the journey of a lifetime. Even today people say he started a new nation with a great faith.
That is what God is asking from you and me. We should listen to his voice and do what he says with great trust. God has a great plan for every one of us and we want to be a part of it. Amen.
