Loving Service Honors Our King
Children's sermon
Object:
"Jesus is King" banner, poster, or bulletin cover
The Point: We serve our king Jesus by serving others.
The Lesson: Good morning, children. Thank you for coming up to share this moment with me.
This is a very special Sunday isn't it? Does anyone know what Sunday this is? (get responses) This is the last Sunday of the church year. Through the past year, everything we have learned about Jesus and his ministry has revealed that Jesus is truly our king. He rules over us in love and grace. He is our Lord and king and that means that we are his subjects. Therefore, we are to do what Jesus our king wants us to do.
This morning in our lesson, we hear that Jesus wants us to spread his kingdom by helping to meet the needs of others. Jesus tells about two different groups of people. One group of people ignores the needs of those around them. They go about their lives without trying to help others. Of them Jesus says, "When I was hungry or didn't have any clothing or needed a place to stay, you ignored me and didn't try to help me." They ask, "When Jesus did we ignore your need?" Jesus says, "When you didn't care for those around you."
The other group of people saw and heard about the needs of others. As God had blessed them they sought to be a blessing to others. They provided food to the hungry, clothing to those who had none, and shelter to those who needed a place to sleep. Jesus said, "When you did to those who were in need, it is as if you did to me. Well done faithful subjects. Come and join my kingdom."
The second group you see shared the love and grace they received from Jesus with others. Jesus wants us to realize that when he is truly king in our lives, we will seek to serve others in their needs. We will help other people to know Jesus' great love for them and us when we are servants to all.
When we serve others with grace and love, Jesus is truly our king.
Closing Prayer: Let us unite our hearts in prayer. Lord Jesus, you alone are worthy of being our Savior and king. By your love you made us children of your kingdom. Help us to serve you, our king, by helping to meet the needs of your people. Jesus, Lord and king, we pray in your holy name. Amen.
