The Power to Follow Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
A large piece of brown construction paper folded in half like a door -- draw door knob on front and back. Draw some stick people or paste a picture of the disciples on the inside.
The Point: Jesus comes to us even when we are afraid and gives us the power to live as his followers.
The Lesson: Good morning, boys and girls! Thank you for coming up to share this moment with me. (Open and close the paper door. Let the children see the people inside.) Do you know what I am doing? (let children answer) Yes, you are right. I am opening and closing a door to a room. As you can see there are people in the room. It could be like the front door of your home or the door to your classroom. It could be a door to a store or even the door to church. Why do we have doors? (let children answer) They let us go in or out; they keep the weather out in the winter or let a cool breeze in during the summer; and sometimes when we are afraid we can lock the door and hide behind it.
John in our Bible reading told us about a time when the disciples of Jesus were afraid. They had seen Jesus arrested and knew that he had died on a cross. They were afraid that they would be arrested too so they locked the door and hid behind it. Suddenly, without the door opening, Jesus was standing in the room with the disciples. Jesus knew they were afraid so he said: "Peace be with you." Then Jesus gave them the gift of the Holy Spirit... the power to trust and believe in him and to tell others that he is not dead but alive.
Sometimes we are afraid too. You may hide behind a locked door, under your blanket, or maybe you hide in the arms of Mom or Dad. When you are afraid remember that Jesus will come to you so that you may have peace. Nothing in this world can stop Jesus from coming to you, not a locked door and not your fear. Even now Jesus gives to you the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the power of the Holy Spirit you can know that Jesus is alive and that Jesus wants you to tell others too.
Closing Prayer: Let's unite our hearts in prayer: Lord Jesus, come to each one of us that your peace may comfort us. May your Holy Spirit fill our lives with great joy and courage so that we may tell our friends and neighbors about you. Jesus, claim these children as your own, fill their lives with the Holy Spirit. Amen.
