Serve in the Name of Jesus
Children's sermon
Object:
an apron
The Point: As Jesus served us we serve others
The Lesson: Welcome girls and boys. Thank you for joining me in this time of sharing Jesus. Does anyone know what this is? (let children answer) Right, it's an apron. Whenever I am going to grill outside or cook something around the stove, I put on an apron. It helps to keep my clothes from being ruined by grease from the food cooking. Wearing an apron is also special for me in another way. It reflects my desire to serve others. I prepare the food and then serve it to family and friends. Whenever I put an apron I say a prayer to myself: "Lord help me to be your servant in all that I do."
In our reading today Jesus' disciples are arguing about who among them will be able to have places of honor. They wanted to sit at Jesus' side, one on the right and one on the left. These were the places of authority and honor. But Jesus teaches them and us, if we want to be great we must be a servant to all. After all, Jesus came to serve us by giving his life for us that we might receive the gift of eternal life.
So are you a servant to others in Jesus' name? Does that mean you need to put an apron to cook for others? (let children answer) Someday maybe. Jesus was a servant to us giving his life for forgiveness of sin. His life is an example for us. Every time we are kind and forgiving to others we are a servant in the example of Jesus. When we uplift someone with gentle words and offer a humble hand of caring, we are a servant in the example of Jesus. When we pray for others and reveal Jesus in our actions and words, we are being a servant for Jesus.
Ask Jesus every day to help you to be his servant in the world. He will use you to feed people with the gift of his saving love.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Jesus, you came to us not to be served but to serve us. Help us to see and understand your life so that we might be your servants in the world. May our actions and words reflect a servant’s heart. Jesus, in your holy name we pray. Amen.
