Jesus, The Bread of Eternal Life
Children's sermon
Object:
Bottle of vitamin pills
The Point: When you believe in Jesus and seek to follow him in your daily life, you are receiving the Bread of Life.
The Lesson: Thank you children for coming up to share this time together.
This morning I have brought with me a bottle of vitamins. How many of you take a vitamin each day? Just about all of you. Vitamins are important to our bodies. We get vitamins in the food that we eat and drink. We even get vitamins from the sunshine, vitamin D. Sometimes we don't eat the right foods or enough of the right foods to get all the vitamins that we need to help us to grow and to be strong and healthy. So, we take a vitamin pill.
If I have this bottle of vitamins on my table at home but don't take one, will it help me? You are right. Having bottles of vitamins will only help if we intentionally take one a day.
In the reading from John today, you heard Jesus say the he is the Bread of Life. We can know all about Jesus. We can read the Bible and discover that Jesus is truly the Son of God. We marvel at how much Jesus loves each of us. We can do a lot of good and wonderful things in his name. But none of that will fill us with the joy of forgiveness nor the peace of being in God's family. Only when we believe in Jesus and seek to follow him in our daily life, will the Bread of Life help our faith to grow strong. Jesus alone gives us what we need for eternal life, forgiveness and a path to God our Father in heaven. You might say that Jesus is our spiritual vitamin. He is the sunshine that gives us true and eternal life.
When you take your vitamin pill each day, so that you can be healthy and strong, remember to receive and follow Jesus because he is truly the Bread of Life.
Prayer: Boys and girls, let us unite our hearts and hands in prayer. Lord Jesus, when you gave your life for us and rose again, you became our Bread of Life. With the gift of your Holy Spirit, help us to believe and follow you everyday of our life. In you alone can we have eternal life. Jesus, in your precious name we pray. Amen.
