Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VII, Cycle B
First Lesson: Job 23:1-9, 16-17
Theme: And Another Thing, Lord ...

Call To Worship (Psalm 8)
One:

O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
All:
Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.
One:
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established;
All:
what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?
One:
Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor.
All:
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet,
One:
all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
All:
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
One:
O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Collect

God of creation, Lord of light, giver of all good things, we live in your beautiful world and celebrate your glory in its wonders. As the season changes we recognize an opportunity for us to change. As leaves prepare to fall we let fall our sins and dedicate our lives to your work. As hunters prepare for the autumn we humbly recognize our own mortality and our place in a larger task of stewardship and conservation. Our worship today celebrates both the mystery and majesty of your will for our lives. Bless us today. These things we pray in your name. Amen.

Prayer Of Confession

No matter what happens, blessed be the name of the Lord. Amen.

Second Lesson: Hebrews 4:12-16
Theme: Walk In Faithfulness

Call To Worship

Not in the glory of stars exploding, or in the majesty of an imperial process, not with the preening feathers of a peacock, or with the roar of a lion, but in this do we find our King, Savior, Shepherd, High Priest, walking humbly, the man of sorrows, bearing our burdens, enduring our pain. This is glory! Come together, God's people, in worship and praise.

Collect

Lord, we seek to walk in faithfulness as did your Son, not hiding from the world, but immersing ourselves in the troubles and trials so we might offer a cup of cold water in your name. Amen.

Prayer Of Confession

God did not arrive as the son of a Caesar, insulated by luxury from the pain of our daily lives. We have a high priest who's been there, done that, and bought the T-shirt. Paid a pretty high price for it, too. Since we have such a high priest let us boldly approach him on his throne, holding fast to our confession that Jesus Christ is Lord! Amen.

Gospel Lesson: Mark 10:17-31
Theme: What's The Absolute Least I Can Do?

Call To Worship

God's people -- it is not in preserving blocks of concrete that the Ten Commandments come to life, but in our resolve to leave everything and follow Jesus. Are you ready? Really ready?

Collect (Micah 6:8)

He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Prayer Of Confession

Lord, we haven't murdered anyone recently. We don't get caught stealing. We tell the truth under oath. That's enough, isn't it? What's the absolute least we can do and still call ourselves, if not your disciples, at least your followers? Fans? Help us out here. It looks next to impossible to get into your kingdom. Speak to us, Lord. Amen.

In the sometimes-tiresome debate over science and scripture with respect to creation, it’s easy to become distracted. While the argument typically requires a focus on the how, we may lose sight of the what. And so, for just a moment, let me invite us to think for a moment about what God created.

Acts 8:26-40
As a local church pastor, I was often asked if I would baptize a child whose family were not members of the church. Some churches rebelled against this, but I remember this scripture — the hunger for understanding and inclusion of the Eunuch and Philp’s response — to teach and share and baptize in the name of our God. How could we turn anyone away from the rite of baptism?

“Dad, I think you worked a miracle.” Rolf slowly walked around the tree. “After that windstorm, I assumed this tree was as good as gone.”

“We just needed to give the branches time to heal and come back,” Michael replied.

“I know, but so many of them were battered and broken I figured that it couldn’t recover. Now though it looks just like it did before the storm.” Rolf paused. “Do you think it will bear any fruit this summer?”

Object: A live plant that produces fruit, and a broken branch from that plant. I used a tomato plant from a local greenhouse. Ideally, find a plant with blossoms or small fruit already growing. If you use a different kind of fruit-producing plant, just change the script to fit.

Call to Worship:

Jesus is the vine, we are the branches. In our service today, let us absorb from the vine all the nourishment we need.

Invitation to Confession:

Jesus, sometimes our branches become cut off from the vine.
Lord, have mercy.

Jesus, sometimes our branches are withered.
Christ, have mercy.

Jesus, sometimes we fail to produce good fruit.
Lord, have mercy.

We will meet Psalm 22 in its entirety on Good Friday, but here the lectionary designates just verses 23-31. The lectionary psalms generally illuminate the week's First Lesson, which in this case is about the covenant initiated by God with Abraham and Sarah in Genesis 17. The nine verses from this psalm, while not inappropriate, nonetheless leave us looking for an obvious connection with the First Lesson.

I think some people are natural-born gardeners. Our Lord grew up in a society that was familiar with agriculture. The images that he used to explain the ways of his Father in heaven are familiar to his audience. Growing up, my closest experience to agriculture was living in, "the Garden State." Most people, when they pass through New Jersey, are surprised to see that expression on the license plates of vehicles registered in New Jersey. Most folks traveling through New Jersey experience the megalopolis, the corridor between New York City and Washington DC.

A pastor in Indiana went to visit an 87-year-old man named Ermil, who was a hospital patient. A member of his church told the pastor about this old man who was an acquaintance. "He's not a believer, but he is really in need," the church member said. "I met him at the county home for the elderly. He's a lonely old man with no family and no money."

"Love is a many splendored thing...." Or so we heard Don Cornwall and the Four Aces sing time and again. Of course you or I might have other words to describe love, depending on our situation.

Love. "I love you." "I love to play golf." "I just love pistachio lush!" "It's tough to love some people." "Jesus loves me, this I know."

Love.
