Magnetic attraction
Children's sermon
Object:
a magnet and small iron shavings or paper clips
Good morning, boys and girls. You probably know what this is,
don't you? (Hold up the magnet.) It's a magnet. Do any of you
know what a magnet does? (Let them answer.) Magnets attract
anything that has iron in it. Our Bible story this morning is a
bout a person who was like a magnet. This person attracted people
just like the magnet attracts iron. Wherever he went people
wanted to be with him. They wanted to hear him talk. They wanted
to have him heal them. This person must have been a very
friendly, wonderful person. Do you know who the person was? (Let
them answer.) The person was Jesus. He was like a magnet.
Here's what our story says: Jesus was walking along the Sea of Galilee. He saw Simon and Andrew fishing. He said to them, "Follow me." Do you know what they did? They immediately stopped what they were doing. They stood up and followed Jesus. Jesus kept walking and came to James and John. He called to them. They immediately stood up and followed Jesus. These men became part of Jesus' 12 disciples. The disciples followed Jesus everywhere.
Now, let's take a look at my magnet. I brought some objects along to show how a magnet works. (Spread the paper clips on top of a thick cardboard. Place the magnet under the cardboard and slowly move it from one side to the other.) Let's pretend t hat this magnet is Jesus. Let's pretend that these paper clips are Simon, Andrew, James and John and (add names of some of the children listening). Here comes Jesus. He says "Simon, Andrew (name other children) follow me." Look what happens.
When we know Jesus, this is what happens to us. We are like the paper clips. We want to follow Jesus. We want to do what Jesus wants us to do. So the next time you see a magnet attracting metal, remember that is how Jesus attracts us. No matter what we are doing, or where we are, we will follow Jesus.
