Zen Buddhism includes methods of disturbing the mind and of abandoning one's usual
way of thinking. A famous Zen story tells of two monks, returning home, who came to a
ford where a pretty girl was waiting, fearful to get her clothes wet. Saying nothing, one
monk simply lifted her into his arms, forded the stream, put her down, and walked on.
The other was horrified, and for miles spluttered his indignation.
"That girl?" the first monk said, suddenly aware of the other's words. "I put her down at the ford. Are you still carrying her?"
