You must understand, my daughter...

"You must understand, my daughter is not to participate in any Halloween activities in the classroom, especially if they involve frightful costumes." No doubt about it, this mother meant business. I could see the second grade teacher understood. She shook her head up and down to indicate so.
I shook my head from side to side, wondering at the mother's intensity. My silent query was quickly answered.
"We don't believe in Halloween," the mother intoned. "It's got nothing to do with what we believe. We're Christians!"
I wondered again. This time I wondered if the pastor of that mother's church had ever explained that Halloween is a contraction of the phrase, "All Hallowed Eve." I wondered if that woman's pastor had taken the time to enlighten how such an eve's preparation was related to "All Saints' Day," the very next day. Ah, yes, I wondered.
A little knowledge, as has been suggested, is a dangerous thing. One uninterpreted vision of frightful monsters is as good as another. Or is it?
