You are familiar with the expression, "Kids say the darndest things," or maybe the one that begins, "And out of the mouths of babes ..."
As this story goes there is a very inquisitive four-year-old who happens to be rooted strongly in the "why" and "tell me" stage of development. Now imagine this scene and listen to the youngster as she helps her father set up the Christmas decorations.
"Why are there so many lights? What do all the colors mean? Why do you cut branches off the tree and hang them on the front door? Did you help your daddy when you were big like me? Why do we bring a tree into the house? Mommy's going to get mad if you make a mess. Daddy, please tell me again the story of baby Jesus?"
Sound familiar? Well it continues.
While the little girl was helping sort out ornaments she asked, "Dad, what does 'ignore' mean?"
The father explained that ignore means not paying attention to someone when they call you, or want your attention.
Immediately the youngster looked up at her father and said, "I don't think we should ignore Jesus."
Puzzled, the father knelt closer to his daughter and replied, "I don't think we should ignore Jesus either. We should give him our full attention. What made you think that?"
"But Dad, that's what the Christmas carol says, 'O come let us ignore him' "
Kids sure do say the darndest things.
