The writer of the Letter...
Illustration
The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews calls upon Christians, in the face of persecution and suffering, to exercise "endurance" (v. 36). In the KJV, the word is translated "patience": "For you have need of patience, so that having done the will of God, you might receive the promise." Today "patience" is apt to be interpreted as an attitude of acquiescence, passivity and even resignation. But in the Bible it has a nobler meaning. In the Old Testament it means "waiting upon God" and in the New Testament it takes on an exciting color because it is linked with faith and hope.
